Wearing Contact Lenses the Healthy Way
The eye is an extremely delicate object and vision is, like all of our senses, extremely important to our everyday well-being. To remain healthy our eyes need to absorb oxygen. This access to oxygen and the fact that protein forms naturally on the cornea mean that any contact lens placed on the eye needs to meet exacting design requirements as well as being able to ‘correct’ vision.
There have been two major developments, both aimed at meeting these exacting standards:
The 1964 invention led by Otto Wicherle of a soft, hydrophilic (water loving) material and the related invention of spin-casting for making contact lenses using this material.
The 1992 invention led by Ron Hamilton of a new process which so revolutionised contact lens manufacturing that the cost per lens was so low that they could be worn for a day then thrown away.
Between these two landmark events the day to day reality for contact lens wearers was high-cost, low convenience and compromised eye-care. Two soft contacts cost £150 and wearers then had to endure the inconvenience of cleaning these two very expensive objects each day. The other, less obvious reality was that the chemicals used to clean the lenses each day would result in allergic reactions to around one in ten wearers.
Lastly, because soft lenses contain almost 50% water, denatured protein would enter the len’s sponge-like ‘matrix’ and would embed itself there leading to discomfort. There had to be a more affordable, more comfortable, more convenient and, of course, a healthier way of wearing contact lenses. It is to this mission that Ron has dedicated considerable time and effort for almost 20 years.
Today Ron Hamilton’s company, daysoft limited, makes and sells millions of daily-disposable contact lenses from its highly automated manufacturing operation in Scotland. As he is proud to point out;
“daysoft is the only company in the world which only makes and sells daily-disposables contact lenses because, quite simply, they are the healthiest. Also, daysoft continues to pioneer the application of new technologies including internet ordering via www.daysoftlenses.com bringing the healthy way for wearing contact lenses to more and more people around the world.”
