Welcome to a Healthier Life
Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) originates from the Kalahari and Savannah desert regions of Southern Africa. It is called Devil’s Claw because the plant displays finger-like growths that are protected by thorns and are of unusual appearance. We sometimes wonder how descriptive any name is. In this case it is extremely apt in that Devil’s Claw really seems to put its claws into the problem, i.e. it reaches out to the heart of it.
Devil’s Claw has been used in treatment programmes for viruses, parasites, and allergic reactions, and the results achieved have often been beyond my expectations. For centuries African natives have used this root for its medicinal properties in a wide range of conditions including fever, malaria and indigestion. It was not until this century that it became available for wider use.
The medicinal attraction is that it contains no toxic substances and has no-known side effects. As a result it is suitable for all-round cleansing of the organs and it has a good diuretic influence. Because of its cleansing properties it acts as a preventative measure against possible undesirable conditions. Devil's Claw can relieve pain and inflammation from arthritis as well as lower back, knee and hip pain. It is also used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis, tendonitis and soft tissue pain. In many reports on herbal medicine we find wonderful testimonies from patients with long-established rheumatic or arthritic histories who have experienced great relief from this root-based treatment.
There are as many as 8 million people suffering from one or other of these conditions. Patients seeking relief or help from doctors or hospitals are often informed that they will simply have to live with their illness and that little can be done.
Devil's Claw (Atrosan) can be an alternative for those taking over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen, which can cause liver and stomach problems. In addition to a proper diet free from acid forming foods, gentle exercise, relaxation and nutritional supplements, Devil’s Claw can be an effective way to keep rheumatic conditions under control the natural way!
My books Traditional Home and Herbal Remedies, and Arthritis, Rheumatism and Psoriasis will give a further insight into Devil’s Claw and also a variety of home remedies from homeopathy to herbs.
